SOMALIA: Lawmakers resume parliament session despite speaker’s absence

By: Abdalle Ahmed
MOGADISHU (RBC) Somalia parliament members had their first sitting in Mogadishu on Saturday after four months of parliament closure despite the absence of their speaker, RBC Radio reports.
Nearly 150 members of the parliament gathered in the parliament’s seat in the capital to show their support to government as they called to end the fierce feud between the top TFG leaders.
“We met today to accept the desire of our people. You know the parliament did not sit at least 4 months.” Lawmaker Abdinasir Garane told RBC Radio. He said the legislators demanded for long time to resume of the sessions but the speaker did not wish to open the house for the sake of political problems between him and the cabinet .
Saturday’s meeting was not chaired by the speaker and his two deputies but the lawmakers selected Mawlid Ma’ani as interim chairperson.
“The MPs are determined to continue this session and to discuss the current issues of the country. Also we call the leadership of the parliament to bring Kampala accord in front of the lawmakers.” Mawlid Ma’ani called.
Many of Somalia parliament members are opposing the Kampala accord facilitated by UN and was signed by President Sheikh Sharif and speaker Sharif Hassan.
